No, Literally...

We always knew that extensive genetic testing, as well as health testing, would be something that we would need to do if we ever wanted to consider breeding in the future. We have previously used UC Davis for a variety of animal testing needs, so it was a no-brainer for us to use their Veterinary Genetics Laboratory for the genetic testing we wanted to have done.

As stewards of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, one of our goals is the betterment of the breed, and that starts at the genetic level. Knowing the genetic risks you are taking with each litter is crucial to ensuring a strong genetic pool and a healthy future for the breed.

We hope that by being transparent in our process, it helps others understand why we do what we do, and the importance of it all.

For those curious about what we’re testing for:

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)
  • Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC)
  • Multidrug Sensitivity (MDR1)
  • Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRCD)
  • Von Willebrand’s Disease (vWD Type 1)
  • Basic Coat Color Panel
  • Coat Length (Longhair, Fluffy)

In our opinion, if you’re not testing your animals to scientifically verify results, how are you able to make informed decisions about the future of your breeding program?
